Hood Packaging will close paper bag factory in Vancouver, Washington - oregonlive.com
Hood Packaging plans to close its paper bag plant in Vancouver and lay off 94 people, the company told Washington state workforce officials this week. It’s the latest setback in the region’s manufacturing sector.
Atlanta-based Hood Packaging submitted a “notice of suspension of operations” to the state and said layoffs will begin Aug. 1 at its factory east of downtown Vancouver. The company did not immediately respond to a request for details about what triggered the shutdown.
Hood makes a variety of paper bags used in animal feed, pet litter, coffee beans, microwave popcorn and many other applications. Hood operates nearly two dozen other factories at sites across the U.S. and Canada.
Manufacturing in Portland and its suburbs has been in decline for about two years, shedding 10,000 positions during that period — about 1 in 12 local factory jobs. That decline presaged a similar falloff nationally.
More cuts are coming, with Intel poised to lay off hundreds or thousands of Oregon workers in the coming weeks as the chipmaker tries to reposition itself after a severe drop in revenue.
